After the 2004 tsunami, much of the local land in this area was being sold off to foreign investors where the much of the coastal zone was restricted to the building of only hotels. The fishermen and their families were pushed from their ancient fishing land to live further inland.
However, they still perservere and continue to head out every morning to fish. They have to travel much further out to sea these days, due to over fishing and illegal methods conducted by large fishing trawlers.
